Cover_Naguib_2010In February 2010, at an international gathering of Egyptologists from various expeditions working in Egypt, Zahi Hawass, Chairman of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities, presented Macquarie University's Naguib Kanawati with a Festschrift entitled 'Egyptian Culture and Society: Studies in Honour of Naguib Kanawati'.

A Festschrift is a book honouring a respected person and containing original contributions by the academic's close colleagues, often including their former doctoral students. It is typically published during their lifetime at the point of a significant career or personal anniversary.

The two volume work presented to Professor Kanawati was prepared to celebrate his contribution to the field of Egyptology, which has spanned over 35 years and resulted in the publication of over 45 books and 40 journal articles.

The honour of editing the Festschrift was given to 3 members of Macquarie University's Ancient History Department, Alexandra Woods, Ann McFarlane and Susan Binder, and includes 39 contributions from colleagues around the world.

The Australian Centre for Egyptology will celebrate Naguib's contribution to Egyptology, as well as the special honour of the presentation of the Festschrift, at its Annual Dinner on Saturday 22 May, 2010.

To enquire about tickets to the dinner, being held at the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club from 6.30pm, contact the ACE office via email: or phone 9850 8848.
